Glitter is certainly making a comeback, and this time, it’s not just for eyes. More brands are developing products to add a little sparkle to your lips, but as with all glitter trends, it can be tricky to pull off if you don’t have the right products or method of application. Here are some simple tricks to achieve glamorous glitter lips.

Priming your lips isn’t anything new. In the past, we would use lip liners to prepare the lips for a more pigmented look, which would make lipstick last and prevent feathering on the ends. However, with glitter, it’s important to use a primer that not only prepares, smoothes and softens the lips, but also gives your makeup a better hold so that the glitter sticks to your lips, especially if you plan on eating or drinking.

TRY: Urban Decay Ultimate Multipurpose Primer Pencil (R300, Foschini) or MAC Prep + Prime Lip (R320, Red Square)

Ultimately, you want to create a pigmented but sticky lip before applying any glitter dust so that it will last the night, and the best way to do so is by using good old lipgloss. While matte-effect lipglosses are very popular, glitter won’t hold very well to these, so rather opt for a gloss that is shiny and moisturising. The colour choice is entirely up to you and what mood you’re in, whether you opt for a bubble-gum pink, neutral nude, fierce red or even a subtle clear gloss, they will all do a great job of creating the perfect hold for your glitter finale. Using a colour lipgloss will result in a more pigmented and bolder look, and you can have lots of fun experimenting by combining different pigment and glitter colours!

TRY: NYX Butter Gloss (R119, Clicks) or Essence Lipgloss XXXL Shine (R39,95, Dis-Chem)

Finally, it’s time to add some sparkle to your lips. The best way to do so is by using your fingertips to gently press the glitter dust onto your lips, as the glitter will appear more pigmented than if you were to use a brush. Remember to use a gentle ‘press and lift’ motion, instead of rubbing the dust over your lips, as rubbing will cause the dust to mix with your gloss creating a subtle look. If you aren’t too sure about rocking glitter lips just yet, you can dull down the shine by choosing to use a metallic eyeshadow or pigment powder instead of glitter, which will create a more wearable shine. Or, for a more edgy look, consider wearing a bold glitter colour such as blue or gold.

TRY: MAC Glitter (R320, Red Square) or Inglot Sparkling Dust (R399, Inglot)

To complement your glittered lips, keep the rest of your makeup simple by opting for a light face contour and a smokey eye that uses matte eyeshadows. Finish off this fierce look with a bold liner and some false lashes.
