We look at some of the most common nail issues and how to prevent or repair them.
With the change of the season upon us, you may have already noticed that your nails are starting to take strain. The harsh elements of winter can leave your cuticles feeling dry and sensitive, while your nails may even become brittle and prone to tearing. Luckily there are a wide variety of products available to ensure that your manicure is in top condition, all year long. Blogger Megan Kelly Botha gives us her recommendations.
WEAK AND BRITTLE NAILS
Give your nails an extra layer of protection by opting for nail treatments that help to cure, treat and strengthen your natural nails. These formulas usually work to harden the nails and prevent them from cracking or peeling. It can also help to massage cuticle oil into your cuticles daily, which will help to improve the condition and overall health of your nails – especially if you work with your hands often. Top tip: Always wear a pair of rubber gloves when doing the dishes – hot water can damage your nails and dehydrate your hands.
TRY: Sally Hansen Miracle Cure nail treatment (R109.95, Clicks) or Mavala Scientifique nail hardener (R269.95, Clicks) and Sorbet Fix Me Fabulous cuticle repair (R94.95, Clicks, pictured) or Essie nail cuticle oil (R149.95, Foschini)
SLOW GROWTH NAILS
When choosing a nail treatment that will help stimulate growth, look for formulas that are enriched with biotin, vitamins and keratin as these will not only help to improve growth, but will also ensure that your nails are stronger and more resilient to breakage.
TRY: Yardley Vitamin Boost nail treatment (R64.95, Foschini) or Sally Hansen Nail Growth Miracle Serum (R119.95, Clicks, pictured)
It is better to use products that will help prevent discoloured nails than to try and treat it. Most often discoloured nails are the result of wearing nail polishes for a lengthened period of time without giving your nails enough time to breathe. You can prevent this from happening by using a high-quality base coat before every nail polish application, thereby protecting the nail from becoming stained.
Top tip: If you already have discoloured nails, use a non-gel toothpaste and gently scrub each of your nails with a baby’s toothbrush. You may need to do this more than once, over a week or so, but the toothpaste will help lighten and remove stains from your nails, without causing extensive damage.
TRY: Essence Studio Nails Pro White Active (R39.95, Red Square) or Revlon Multi-Care base & top coat (R155, Red Square)
Ridges in your nails can be caused by things like the dry air of winter, being exposed to harsh cleaning chemicals and not drinking enough water. The problem is that ridges can often lead to weakened nails, splitting or even breakage. While there are long-term solutions like drinking more water, and keeping your hands hydrated and protected, you can also start by using nail treatments that provide an instant fix. These treatments will help to visibly sculpt the nail, filling in the gaps and smoothing rough fibres, which will also strengthen your nails.
TRY: Essie Nail Fill the Gap (R149.95, Foschini, pictured) or Mavala Nail Ridge Filler (R170, Dis-Chem)
