Split ends, brittleness, and lack of shine could all indicate that you’re suffering from dry hair. Some of the things that could cause dry hair include:

  • Bleaching, colouring and heat
  • Using products that strip your hair
  • Build-up from hair products.

Natural hair blogger Miriam Maulana from New Kid on the Block talks us through getting dry hair happy and healthy.

STEP ONE: NO SHORTCUTS

Keeping your hair moisturised during the hot, dry summer is so important. You have to work hard to retain moisture, so, stop half stepping and put in the effort. Wash days can be such a drain, but it’s worth it when your hair feels soft and healthy. Make sure you pre-poo regularly, with a penetrating and moisturising oil, conditioner, or combination.

‘Pre-pooing’ – or treating your hair prior to shampooing or conditioning – prevents too much moisture being stripped away from your hair when you shampoo.

TRY: My Natural Hair Strengthening Oil (R99.95, Clicks); Afro Botanics Black Pearl Hydrating Conditioner (R94.95, Clicks, pictured) or Aunt Jackie’s Soft All Over Oil (R81.95, Clicks).

In addition, make sure you’re vigilant about deep conditioning – yes, every single time you wash your hair. Even if it’s only for a few minutes in the shower, while you get ready for the day. Here are some of my favourite products for a powerful deep-conditioning session:

TRY: L’Oréal Elvive Extraordinary Masque (R89.95, Foschini) or Afro Botanics Strengthening Treatment Masque (R63.95, Clicks).

STEP TWO: SEAL IN THE MOISTURE

As part of your wash-day routine, add a hydrating leave-in conditioner that softens hair, promotes manageability and shine, while busting frizz.

TRY: Ultimate Organic Therapy Olive Oil Leave-In Conditioner (Pick n Pay, R36.95); Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioner (R129, Clicks) and Elvive Extraordinary Oil (R89.95, Foschini).

Follow the LOC Method: Leave in conditioner, seal it with oils, and finish off with a good cream or butter. These creams will help make sure your hair does not lose all that moisture.

TRY: My Natural Hair Moisturising Butter (R94, Clicks); Aunt Jackie’s Flaxseed Seal it in Butter (R78.95, Clicks, pictured) or Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Anti Breakage Hair Butter (R79.95, Checkers).

STEP THREE: PUT THE GEL DOWN

Although there are plenty of amazing gels and jellies that work wonders on natural hair and don’t typically cause dryness, they can make the hair feel dry, rough and brittle. If you want to flaunt your beautiful locks this summer, I suggest swapping out the gels and jellies for curling creams.

You might not get a 7-to-10-day style, but you will have lust-worthy, shiny, healthy hair.

TRY: Aunt Jackie’s Curl La La (R59.95, Clicks); Aunt Jackie’s In Control Curls and Coils (R69.95, Clicks) or Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula Hair Pudding (R98.95, Clicks, pictured).

Finally, embrace your shrinkage, and enjoy your natural hair all summer long!
