What is a credit bureau?

Credit bureaus gather your credit history into a report for lenders to use when assessing your credit application. How many credit bureaus are there in South Africa?

Overall there are 11 credit bureaus that different creditors may report back to and hold different information about you. These are;

Full member credit bureaus: Consumer Profile Bureaus (CPB), Experian, TransUnion, VeriCred, and Xpert Decision System (XDS).

Intermediate credit bureau members are: Managed Integrity Evaluation (MIE) and Tenant Profile Network.

Reseller credit bureau members are: Credit IT Data Risk Management Solution, Lexis Nexis Risk Management Services, Searchworks 360, and Africa Credit Bureau.

The four main credit bureaus in South Africa

There are four main credit bureaus, namely; Experian, TransUnion, Compuscan, and XDS. These are full member credit bureaus and are the most commonly used credit bureaus.

  • Experian is a global credit bureau established in 1980, operating in 36 countries, and is a leader in information solutions. Experian provides credit reports in an easy to read format for you to compare with other reports. Giving you an insight into your credit status.
  • TransUnion Credit Bureau has been operating for more than 100 years and keeps data on 18 million consumers and 3.3 million businesses. Headquartered in Chicago, TransUnion is one of the largest and respected credit bureaus in the world, with offices in 23 countries.
  • Compuscan, established in 1994, is the first African credit bureau and is committed to being a total credit management solutions provider for emerging markets. Compuscan collects, verifies, houses, and distributes consumer credit information. Along with this, they provide products and services to help customers minimise risk and increase profits. Aiming to develop purpose-driven credit management and strengthen customer relationships.
  • XDS (Xpert Decision Systems) is a 100% independently black-owned credit bureau in South Africa. They provide innovative, user-focused information solutions that are specific to consumers’ needs.
