The smoky eye is one of those looks that doesn’t date – and Bonang Matheba knows it! She’s turned heads with this look from her first morning meeting, onto the red carpet and then well into the night.

But you don’t need to be a superstar with a team of make-up artists to pull it off. Just follow our easy steps.

  1. GET PRIMED

Use a good primer to keep this look in place – you don’t want to go from gorgeous to goth while you dance the night away!

  1. LAY THE FOUNDATION

Use concealer to cover up any spots or bumps and to even out under your eyes. We’re going for the smoky look here – not raccoon eyes. Get that flawless look with a good foundation, and brush lightly with powder to set it all when you’re done. A smooth, clear skin will help your eyes to really pop.

  1. THROW SOME SHADE

Using a good-quality brush, cover your lid from lashes to fold with the colour you want to use. The smoky look can be pulled off with black, grey, navy or even fun shades of plum and green. Use a thin angled brush to bring the colour to your lower lash line.

  1. GET SMUDGY

Using an earbud or a smudging brush, go around the edges of the colour you’ve applied – you don’t want any strong lines here. Blending is the key to pulling this look off, so take your time here.

  1. FILL IT IN

Using your favourite kohl liner, go over the top and bottom lashes, and make sure there is no skin showing. Run the pencil over your inner bottom lash line to really take the look home.

  1. HIGHLIGHT

For an added bit of contrast, add a lighter colour with a bit of sparkle along your brow bone, and to the inner corner of your eyes.

  1. FRAME IT UP

Use a volumising mascara to finish off the look. For an extra bit of va va voom, consider using an eyelash curler, or wearing falsies.

Pair your new look with some bright red lippie to make a splash, or a darker maroon if you want to keep the focus on your eyes. Now you’re ready to take on the world!
