From year-end parties to family gatherings, the summer holidays are filled with decadent dinner parties and lekker lunches. Take it up a notch when it’s your turn to play host with a gorgeous set table. Here are some ideas.

Go for gold

Black and gold are a great combo if you’re looking to make a statement. This kind of set-up will work well if you’re having your boss round for dinner, or someone else you really want to impress. Start with a black backdrop like a table runner (R259, Tafelberg Furnishers), and bring the colour into the crockery (from R14.99, Checkers). Hints of gold can be included with accessories like the underplates (R149, Home Etc.), vases (R99.99, Checkers) and candle holders.

Bling it up

White and crystal are a classic look to go with for an elegant dinner for adults. We chose a white tablecloth with a subtle print for some interest (R90, Game) and added slick, modern crockery (from R49, Home Etc.) and cutlery (Eetrite Newport, R899 for a 44-piece set, Home Etc.). Cut glass crystal – or something that looks like it – will really add that luxurious feel. We just love the selection at Home Etc. (from R159). Finish off your table setting with some candles and fresh flowers.

Back to earth

The trendy natural look works well for more relaxed al fresco dining and lunches. Bring an organic, artisan feel in with wooden and ceramic elements, like the placemat (R45, Home Etc.) and salad tray (R299, Home Etc.) we chose. You can also have lots of fun with textures and prints. We incorporated them into the utensil plate and pinch bowls (R90 and R60 each, Poetry), chunky glasses (from R50, Poetry) and dinner plate (R29.99, Checkers).

’Tis the season

Red and green are at the core of any festive look, so go bold, like we did, with beautiful red dinner plates (from R20, Game). Bring in the second colour more subtly – we chose a softer green placemat (R32, Home Etc.) and floral printed napkins (R220 for three, Poetry). Include a gift tag with a handwritten note to add that personal touch to your setting.
