Whether you’re working, playing or simply living, you need fresh air to survive. Houseplants are your solution: they pump out oxygen, brightening up your space. Here’s a selection of five indoor plants that’ll clear the air in your home, while providing some attractive greenery in the process.
Known as Saintpaulia ionantha to plant fundis, this perennial flowering plant is native to eastern tropical Africa. Their attractive flowers will bring a pop of colour to your room: usually in purple, but sometimes also in red, white or pink.
Like the African Violet, English Ivy (or Hedera helix to botanists) is an active air-cleaner, known for removing chemicals like benzene and formaldehyde from the air. English Ivy also has medicinal properties, being beneficial to asthma sufferers. It grows best in hanging baskets, in parts of the house that get equal amounts of sun and shade.
Also known as Marginata (or Dracaena marginata), this hardy little tree doesn’t ask for much, but it gives a lot. It’s easy to care for, and will bounce back strongly if you forget to water it, but it sucks the bad stuff – from formaldehyde to cigarette smoke – out of the air.
The US space agency Nasa put this plant (Chlorophytum comosum) near the top of their list of houseplants that clear the air of formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and other toxins. It’s resilient (which means it won’t die straight away if you forget to water it!), and it’s considered safe if you have pets in the house. It grows best in bright sunlight.
Another Nasa favourite, Gerbera jamesonii is good at removing benzene from the air. It breathes out a lot of oxygen at night, making it great for bedrooms (especially baby rooms). It produces beautiful bright flowers – hence the “daisy” bit – which last for more than a week, especially if it’s kept in direct sunlight.
