Beauty blogger Cynthia Gwebu shows us how to bring this season’s hot new trend of bold lip colours into the workplace.
As we prep for success in the new year at work or school, inevitably we lose that ‘holiday spirit’ the festive season brought out in us. One of the ways I like to bring a bit of the holiday cheer into everyday life is with the simplest of things – lipstick.
These little tubes of tricks have the ability to alter any mood for the better and have a knack for adding the final touch to any outfit. So while corporate garb has a reputation for being stiff and lacklustre, I’ve got ways you can spruce up your look for the boardroom.
Most corporate wardrobes tend to boast cool tones of grey, navy and the occasional white, but I like to encourage a little play of colour when it comes to make-up.
You definitely want a signature red lip in your arsenal. It is quite possibly the greatest confidence booster and has a name for pulling an entire look together. You’ll want to try Clinique Pop Matte Lip Colour in Peppermint Pop (R295, Edgars and Red Square).
Orange is indeed the new black when it comes to having this pop of colour as a fresh summer lippie. While red screams “force to be reckoned with”, orange is her friendlier, more approachable cousin. And once again with bright lip colours, I prefer a mattifying option, a sure-fire way to subdue the attention it causes. Try Smashbox Be Legendary Matte Lipstick in Fireball (R295, Red Square).
Pink is often considered to be the shade that encourages playfulness 24/7, but when selecting your hue, be sure to opt for a soft gloss, a mere pout enhancer instead of a bold, opaque shout of colour. For this, I love the Lancôme Juicy Shakers (R315, Red Square). They are pigmented lip oils that provide a wash of colour to the lips.
While burgundy and berry tones are often associated with autumn and winter, they certainly provide a brooding pop of colour to any workplace ensemble. The darker sibling to the classic siren red is best paired with a nude eye holding the lightest coat of mascara, and Bobbi Brown does berries and burgundies best with their selection of Creamy Lip Color lipsticks. Try Bobbi Brown Creamy Lip Color in Raisin Berry (R365, Red Square).
There is nothing quite like enhancing your natural lip colour with a similarly flesh-toned hue. The trick lies in selecting the most flattering shade for your complexion. To determine, trial and error is advised – which means visiting your favourite beauty supply store and playing with the different shades on offer. I do, however, have a personal favourite, Xtreme Lip Cream in Skin Tone by NYX Cosmetics (R99.95, Clicks).
What shade will you be rocking in the workplace this season?
