Between the expense of gifting, meals and trips away, many people feel financial pressure over the festive season and struggle between treating their families and sticking to their budgets. This year, many families’ financial situations will make those budgets even tighter. We want to show you that you don’t have to compromise with our favourite gifting ideas that won’t break the bank:

  1. Host a clothing swop
Vintage and thrifted fashion is becoming a stylish and sustainable alternative to buying new, costly clothes. Gather a few of your friends and ask them to each bring items that are in good condition, but they have grown tired of, and exchange the clothes in your group to update your wardrobes for free. You could make a day of it, or if you don’t feel comfortable doing it in person, have everyone show off the clothes they want to swop on Zoom.
  2. Create custom Spotify/YouTube playlists
Put together a playlist on a music streaming service that your loved one can access, with music that you think they will enjoy. It can be a wonderful way to introduce people to new music and shows that you put thought and effort into the gift, even though it didn’t cost you any money.

  1. Share your skills
What are your talents? Are you a baker, a gardener, a seamstress, a photographer or a home-maintenance pro? Offer to help out or teach someone your tips and tricks, because passing on knowledge and skills is priceless. Teach them to sew, show them some gardening tips or let them star in their own photoshoot.
  2. Try some good old-fashioned holiday baking
Even though you will have to spend some money on the ingredients, baking your own holiday treats works out cheaper than buying them. Plus, can be a fun time in the kitchen and shows your loved ones that you put time and effort into their gifts.

Write it down
Handwritten notes are always so much more special then typed ones, so write a letter, poem or story about to friends and family members that they can cherish for years to come. Writing down special memories, or things you love about a person can be incredibly sentimental and priceless.
