Beauty blogger Megan Kelly reveals the latest beauty trend, draping, and shows us how to get the look.
Move over Kim Kardashian, there is a new trend in town! Similar to contouring, draping is a technique for sculpting your face by subtly adding shape and depth using blush instead of dark contouring products. The idea is to give your face a soft, glowy and flushed look, perfect for the warmer seasons.
Whether you’re looking to contour, sculpt or drape your face, you can shop for everything you need to keep up with the latest beauty trends with your RCS Card.
STEP 1: APPLY YOUR FIRST SHADE
Just as you do with contouring, draping requires at least two shades for application. The first shade should be a more neutral, darker colour – like an apricot-peach or nude shade – and will be used to sculpt and add shape to your face. Start by applying your blush to the hollows of your cheek and blend outwards, using an oversized powder brush. For a more intense look, you can lightly apply blush around the edges of your face, creating a gentle shadow.
TRY: NYX Professional Makeup HD Blush in Soft Spoken (R65, Clicks); Benefit The Blush Bunch (R395, Red Square); Real Techniques Blush Brush (R215, Foschini); or Estée Lauder Blush Brush (R795, Foschini).
STEP 2: APPLY YOUR SECOND SHADE
Now that you have given your face a little shape with light sculpting, it’s time to add a natural flush. Remember that you’re going for a post-workout glow, so choose a blush that is pink with a soft satin finish. Using the same powder brush, lightly dust and blend the brighter blush onto the apples of your cheeks and up your cheekbones, gently blending where the two colours meet to create that soft glow.
TRY: Clinique Blushing Blush Powder Blush Aglow (R430, Clicks), or Essence Mosaic Blush (R64.95, Foschini).
ADD THE EYESHADOW
Use the same lighter colour for your eyeshadow. Continue applying your eyeshadow out to meet up with the contouring you’ve done on your cheekbones. Don’t forget to keep it light and continue blending as you go.
Pro tip: When adding your eyeshadow, just squeeze your blusher brush tightly in your fingers and apply the colour using that. Then release the pressure and continue to blend.
If you want to use a highlighter to really brighten the look, apply the same one to both the tops of your cheekbones and to your upper eyelids.
WEAR THE TREND!
Besides being super easy to achieve, the new draping trend can be dressed up or down. For a simple, effortless look, wear a clear or pink gloss, paired with a volumising mascara and BOOM! You’re ready to go! For a full-glam look, pair your draping with a gold smokey eye, fluffy brows, and a bold coral lip. Don’t forget to complete the look with a sleek updo, to show off those glowing cheekbones!
