Straight from the catwalks, onto your screen! Here’s how to get the glossy eye look perfected.
‘90s trends are still cropping up in the fashion and beauty world with some regularity. One of the more popular ones, the glossy eye look, has just seen a revival. From gracing the catwalks of fashion houses at shows across the world, it has now made its way to everyday makeup.
Don’t be daunted – while it looks complicated to do, if you follow these simple steps you’ll find it super easy to pull off.

STEP 1: PREP AND PRIME
Help your look last by priming your eyelids with a longwearing base. This helps to even out the skin tone of your eyelids and get the eyeshadow to adhere better. Maximise shine by opting for a shimmer base. Apply with a flat synthetic brush and blend out using a clean fingertip. Set with a light dusting of translucent setting powder.
TRY: Matt bases: NYX Eyeshadow Base (R109.95, Clicks), Urban Decay Primer Potion (R320, Foschini), Eye Shadow Keeper (R369, Inglot); shimmer bases: Urban Decay Primer Potion in Sin (R320, Foschini) or NYX Eyeshadow Base in Pearl (R109.95, Clicks).
STEP 2: ADD EYESHADOW
This is where you decide whether you want something subtle or if you’re going for full drama. If you like a more natural look, opt for a neutral shade that matches your skin tone and apply all over your lid from lash line to brow bone. Sweep a deeper tone in your crease to add definition. If bold colour is more your style, apply the shade of your choice to your moveable lid and blend up towards your crease. For additional shine, opt for satin or shimmery eyeshadow formulations. Metallic cream shadows pack a lot of shine punch and look especially intense. Line your eyes with your favourite eye liner and apply mascara. If you like wearing false lashes, apply them now.
TRY: Smashbox Photo Op Eye Shadow Trio (R380, Foschini), Freedom System Eye Shadow (R149, Inglot), AMC Pure Pigment (R299, Inglot) or Essence Mono Eyeshadow (R34.95, Clicks).
STEP 3: GLOSS IT UP
Here you have a number of options, depending on your pocket. You can use a specific eye gloss product, or opt for a ‘hacked’ option like lip gloss, face balm, lip balm, facial oil or even Vaseline. When using lip gloss, make sure to choose one that is not too runny or sticky. Dab a tiny amount of your chosen product onto the eyelid using a clean finger or small flat synthetic brush. Make sure to pat or dab rather than rub, or you’ll disturb the eyeshadow you applied. You can add more product to amp up the shine. Avoid getting gloss in the crease as this can cause smudging.
TRY: MAC Studio Eye Gloss (R320, selected Foschini stores), Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant (R285, Foschini), NYX Mega Shine lip gloss (R110, Clicks), MAC Lipglass (R230, selected Foschini stores), Sleek lip gloss (R249, Inglot), High Gloss Lip Oil (R449, Inglot), or MAC Mixing Medium Shine (R330, selected Foschini stores).
Beginner’s tip: If all of this is just too much for you, try mixing loose eyeshadow pigment into baby oil gel and applying the mixture to the eyelids.
