As South Africa prepares for National Braai Day, round off your helpings of steak and boerie with this delicious pull-apart cheesy garlic loaf.
We usually start our recipes by telling you about the nutritional benefits of the meals and their ingredients. This time we’re talking about a cheesy, buttery, garlicky braai loaf… so it’s less about how good it is, and more about how great it tastes!
Mind you, that’s not to say that this braai loaf doesn’t have some healthy body benefits. Garlic is known to combat sickness (including that late-winter cold you’re fighting off), fight cancer and slow the ageing process… and all of that, with very few calories! A 28g helping of garlic contains just 42 calories (175kJ), with 1.8g of protein and 9g of carbs.
But that’s beside the point. This weekend sees South Africa celebrate National Braai Day (or Heritage Day, to give its official name) – and this delicious loaf will perfectly round off your day around the fire.
100g butter, softened
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 garlic clove, crushed
¼ cup chopped parsley
1 large, flat loaf of good-quality bread
100g mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced
Combine the butter, seasoning, garlic and parsley and mix well. Cut the bread into slices, but not all the way through, from top to bottom and side to side to form squares. Spread the garlic butter into the crevices of the bread and fill with the cheese slices. Wrap the bread in foil and place over medium coals, turning after 3 minutes.
