It may be summer in South Africa, but we all love the image of a beautiful snow globe over the festive season. With these incredibly cute cookies, you can bring that magic of a winter wonderland into your home and have plenty of fun with the kids while you make them together.

This recipe creates 24 magical snow globe cookies.

120g butter or margarine, softened

70g (125ml) icing sugar

270g (500ml) cake flour

15-30ml water or milk

2 cups (500ml) icing sugar, plus extra for dusting

Few drops of green food colouring

¼ cup hot water

Small glass jars with lids

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius.

Cream the butter and icing sugar with an electric mixer or by hand until light and fluffy. Add the flour and mix together to form a soft ball of dough. Add the milk or water slowly to bind the dough together. Only add as much liquid as you need. Dust the surface with flour and roll out the dough until it’s ½ cm thick.

Cut out tree shapes (make sure the cookie fits into your jar) and place on a lined baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 16-20 minutes or until just golden around the outside. Allow to cool completely.

Make the icing by combining the icing sugar, food colouring and hot water to form a thick paste. Dip the front of each cookie into the icing, allow the excess to run off and then place on a cooling rack to set completely.

Use a small blob of icing to stick the base of the tree onto the bottom of the jar lid and allow to set. Dust the tree with icing sugar then place the glass jar on top to form a snow globe.

These snow globe cookies are brilliant: they’re fun to make with the kids, they make cute festive decorations and they’re yummy to eat!
