Bread and soup are a match made in heaven, especially on a chill winter’s day. So what could be better than dipping a freshly made slice into your favourite soup? We think these bread bowls definitely take it to the next level!

 

They’re really easy to make and will be a hit for any occasion this winter. You can whip them up for your friends at a dinner party, or just make them for yourself if you need some comfort food on a rainy afternoon.

 

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

These ingredients will make up four yummy bread bowls:

 

500g white bread flour

½ tbsp fine salt

10g instant dry yeast

350ml warm water

150g mozzarella, grated

 

Don’t forget to make your favourite soup to fill up the bowls.

And cracked black pepper for the final touch before serving.

 

 

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

These bread bowls are surprisingly simple to make. Start by combining the flour and salt in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a dough hook (or you could do this by hand in a large mixing bowl). Add the yeast and mix again. Next, add the warm water and mix to form a soft dough – add more water if necessary.

 

Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Cover the bowl with clingwrap and allow the dough to rest for 10 minutes.

 

Divide the dough into four pieces and roll into balls. Place the balls on a greased baking sheet, allowing enough space for spreading, and then cover with greased clingwrap. Allow the dough to rise in a warm place until it’s doubled in size.

 

Preheat the oven to 220 degrees Celsius and place a baking sheet on the bottom. Place the rolls in the oven on a separate baking sheet. Then quickly throw ½ cup of water onto the bottom baking sheet to form steam. Close the oven door quickly and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden in colour. The rolls are ready when they sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

 

 

Once the rolls are cool, use a sharp knife to hollow out a piece in the middle. Don’t throw this away though! It’ll make a cute lid for your soup when it comes time to serve.

 

When you’re ready to serve, pour your hot soup into the centre of the roll, top with cheese and black pepper and enjoy your meal immediately.
