I’m Nkhensani and I will be sharing six products I love to use to take care of my natural hair, especially during winter when natural hair is more prone to breakage as the cold air sucks all the moisture from it.  The goal is to maintain your natural hair health despite the chilly weather. So now onto the fun part – my winter hair care tips and the products I use.

  1. PRE-POO

Pre-shampooing is the beginning of the washday process using oil and/or a conditioner. Apply these before shampooing to moisturise the hair, and help detangle and soften it. Shampooing can strip the hair of its moisture and make it dull and dry. Having an additional layer besides the natural layer of moisture can help reduce the dryness it causes.

I love to use coconut oil as a lightweight conditioner for my pre-shampoo which also helps so much with detangling my hair. I use the PnP Coconut Oil followed by My Natural Hair Hydrating Conditioner.

Co-washing – which means washing your hair with conditioner – is great for cleaning hair without drying it out if you can’t shampoo at least every two weeks like I do. As I Am recently launched in South Africa, and their co-wash is amazing at removing residue while keeping hair moisturised.

This step is the most important step and one that should be done weekly. I have tried so many deep conditioners but an absolute favourite of mine has to be the Aunt Jackie’s Fix My Hair Intensive Repair Conditioning Masque. This deep conditioner is MAGICAL. It not only deeply moisturises my hair, but it also strengthens and restores it.

LOC stands for Liquid, Oil and Cream. Because this method can be altered to your liking, I personally love using Liquid, Cream, Oil as it keeps my hair moisturised the longest. For liquid, the Cantu Leave-In Conditioning Repair Cream is amazing to use because it has a creamy and thick consistency, but isn’t heavy, and has water as its first ingredient which is essential to healthy hair. For oil, I use Native Child Castor Growth Oil as my holy grail, sealing the moisture into my hair while promoting hair growth. And lastly, for cream, I’m obsessed with the African Pride Olive Miracle Anti-Breakage Creme which really nourishes hair by helping to reduce breakage and dryness.
