Beauty blogger Megan Kelly shares tips on which products you should be using this season, and how to spring clean your makeup collection.
Spring has sprung and what better excuse to pick up some of the latest beauty launches and embrace this season’s trends? But before you hit the shops, be sure to use these helpful tips to spring clean your makeup collection and get rid of any expired makeup, so that you know what to replace. Megan Kelly gives us the lowdown.
OUT WITH THE OLD, TO MAKE SPACE FOR THE NEW
This may come as a surprise, but makeup has an expiration date. It is important that you discard old makeup as it not only loses efficiency, but you run the risk of causing damage to your skin. Thankfully, makeup has a better shelf life than milk and you can get some good use from your favourite products before having to make any repurchases.
Here are the most important numbers to remember:
- Mascara has the shortest life span and should be thrown away after three months from opening, as you run the risk of it drying out or causing eye infections.
- Eyeliners, lip liners and eye shadows are more forgiving and should be changed every six to 12 months.
- Lipsticks will last around a year and a half.
- Foundations can be tricky. The average expiration date is a year from opening, however, you should discard a foundation at the first sign of the formula’s texture or scent changing, to avoid breakouts.

THE RIGHT FOUNDATION FOR SPRING
Glowing skin is an absolute must for the warmer months. To achieve this look, start your day with a hydrating moisturiser that leaves your skin feeling plump and hydrated. Next, mix a pea-size amount of brightening primer with a foundation of your choice. Try opting for a foundation that offers long wear but is also light to medium coverage, so that the heat doesn’t leave you looking like your makeup has melted off.
TRY: Estée Lauder Illuminating Perfecting Primer (R425, Foschini) or CATRICE Prime and Fine Beautifying Primer (R75, Dis-Chem) and Revlon ColorStay Foundation (R325, Clicks) or Essence Camouflage 2in1 Make-up & Concealer (R79.95, Foschini)
A bad mascara can take your makeup from looking fab to drab in a hot minute. When choosing mascara, keep in mind what you’d like the mascara to do for your lashes. Whether it is a volumising, lengthening or defining mascara, you should also consider your own lashes and how the brush will cling to them, to avoid transfer onto your eyelids and below the lash line. You may find yourself hanging around the pool or perhaps even at some beach parties, so be sure to pick up a waterproof formula so that you can still rock fuller lashes, despite your love of water.
TRY: Lancôme Hypnôse Waterproof Mascara (R390, Foschini) or Maybelline Great Lash Waterproof Mascara (R99.95, Foschini)
ROCK BRIGHT LIPS
The secret to putting a spring in your step is daring to rock a bright lip. When choosing a bold lipstick, make sure that you know whether your skin is warm or cool toned so that you can pick a shade that complements your complexion. Cool-toned girls can rock pinks and reds that have a slight blue undertone, which will make your teeth look brighter too, while warm-toned girls can have fun with corals, oranges and candy-apple reds.
TRY: Lancôme L'Absolu Rouge cream lipstick (R399, Foschini), or L'Oréal Paris Makeup Designer Color Riche Matte Obsession lipstick (R179.95, Clicks)
