You might not need as long as the ladies do to get ready, but that doesn’t mean you get a free pass on the grooming front. Pick out the right product to make your shaving routine as effortless and effective as possible.

Lay the foundation for the perfect shave by first doing a gentle scrub to slough off dead skin cells and soften the stubble. Pick out a good product, then wet your face with warm water, and apply the scrub in gentle circles to your skin. Pay special attention to your forehead, cheeks, nose and chin creases, and neck, as this is where the most build-up occurs. Rinse with cool water, and pat your skin dry with a clean towel.

TRY: Loréal Men Expert Black Charcoal Wash 150ml, R90.99, Pick n Pay; Lab Series Invigorating Face Scrub 100ml, R450, Edgars; or Hawkins & Brimble Pre-Shave Scrub 125ml, R180, Clicks

If you’ve got more of a bona fide beard than stubble, it’s a good idea to trim the fuzz before you shave. Using a razor on thicker hair will be both painful and ineffective. Grab some scissors, or better yet trimmers, to cut down your facial hair before facing the blade.

TRY: Safeway Men’s Hair and Beard Trimmer, R199, Clicks; WAHL Groomsman Recharge Clipper, R379, Game; or Braun Cruzer 6 Precision Beard Styling Trimmer, R559, Makro

If you’ve never used a shaving brush, you’re missing out. These simple doodads are able to whip your soap or foam up to the perfect consistency, thickening the lather and making it much easier for application. The gentle abrasion also helps to scrape away any remaining dirt or debris left on your skin, and raise the hairs for a closer cut. Pick one that has both firm, but soft bristles.

TRY: Wooden Shaving Brush, R170, The Body Shop; or Hawkins & Brimble Shaving Brush, R360, Clicks

It’s time to clean up that stubble. Using the right foam, cream or gel means fewer nicks and bumps, a beautifully close shave, and happy, moisturised skin. Experts recommend using shaving foam if you have oily skin, or shaving cream if you have tough stubble.

TRY: L’Occitane Cedrat Shaving Gel 150ml, R250, Edgars; Sandalwood Shaving Crème 100ml, R38, Signature Cosmetics; or Hawkins & Brimble Shaving Cream 100ml, R180, Clicks

A good aftershave will not only sterilise the skin and reduce irritation, but it will leave a delectable scent too.

TRY: Halo Emboss 75ml, R75, Signature Cosmetics; Jovan Musk for Men After Shave 118ml, R219.95, Clicks; or Aramis Advanced Moisturising After Shave Balm, R830, Edgars

When you shave it’s not just stubble that’s removed, but some of the outer layers of skin too. Use a good moisturiser with SPF to protect the ‘newer’ layers of skin, now exposed, and to help encourage your skin to recover after the shave.

TRY: Nivea Men Protective Moisturiser 75ml, R105.99, Clicks; Guarana and Coffee Energising Moisturiser for Men, R210, The Body Shop; or Kiehl’s Facial Fuel 125ml, R360, Edgars
