Youth in motion: the RCS Gugs Race brings South Africans together this Youth Day

08 JUNE 2026

08 June 2026: Fifty years ago, the youth of South Africa changed the course of the country’s history. On 16 June 2026, Gugulethu will mark that anniversary the way it knows best, by lacing up and taking to the streets together for the RCS Gugs Race. This event will bring together runners, families and communities in celebration of youth development, wellness and the unifying power of sport.

The race returns to NY 49 Gugulethu Stadium on Tuesday, 16 June 2026, hosted by the Gugulethu Athletics Club and sponsored by RCS. While rooted in community tradition, the 2026 race places a renewed focus on the role of sport in shaping the next generation, providing young people with a platform to build discipline, resilience and a sense of purpose.

RCS has backed the Gugulethu Athletics Club for 26 years, and that long-standing support extends to the Gugs Youth Day Race itself. The race has become a recognised fixture of the Western Cape running calendar, with its own traditions and friendships built around it.

Running for youth development, wellness and opportunity
It’s more than just a race. The RCS Gugs Race highlights the critical role that physical activity and structured sport can play in young people’s lives. In a country where many youth face ongoing social and economic challenges, initiatives like this create accessible pathways for personal growth, mentorship and positive community engagement.

“Sport has the power to open so many doors for young people. It teaches them valuable life skills such as consistency, teamwork and perseverance,” says Kentaro Toyosaki, Chairperson of the Gugulethu Athletics Club. “The Gugs Race is not just about competition. It is about young South Africans seeing what is possible for themselves, on the track and off it.”

This year’s event also creates opportunities to spotlight emerging talent, with competitive prize categories across age groups and an added incentive for record-breaking performances, encouraging young athletes to push their limits.

A race with purpose, for every pace
The 2026 event features both a timed 10km race (starting at 07:15) and a Fun Run (starting at 07:30), catering to seasoned runners, aspiring youth athletes and community members alike. With accessible entry options, medals for the first 2,000 finishers, and a vibrant race day atmosphere, the event fosters a strong sense of achievement and belonging.

For RCS, backing the club for 26 years has meant a long-term commitment to the community that hosts it. Through this partnership, RCS continues to position itself as a committed partner in community development, recognising the role that wellness and active living play in unlocking opportunities. Sandi Richardson, Chief People Officer at RCS, encourages participation as part of a broader commitment to supporting South African youth.

“At RCS, we believe in the power of possibility, especially when young people are given the support and platforms to grow and push themselves,” she says. “The Gugs Race reflects what can happen when communities come together to invest in wellbeing, opportunity and the future of our youth.”

Inspiring the next generation to take part

Among the young runners looking forward to this year’s event is Edward Jack, a regular winner of the Gugulethu races, who says the RCS Gugs Race continues to inspire more young people to get active and challenge themselves. “What makes this race special is the atmosphere and seeing new runners come out every year,” he says. “You do not have to be a professional athlete to take part. Whether you are running to compete, improve your fitness or simply be part of the community, there is a place for everyone at the starting line.”

Beyond the finish line
Taking place on the 50th anniversary of Youth Day, the race carries additional significance, serving as both a commemoration of the past and a forward-looking investment in South Africa’s youth.

By creating spaces where young people can actively participate, connect and discover their potential, the race reinforces the idea that meaningful development happens both on the ground and within communities.
