Summer’s here! And – barring a few glorious seasonal thundershowers – that means you’ll want to spend as much time as possible outside, enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. With a few quick, simple, on-trend tweaks, it’s easy to shift your living area outside.

Your patio/garden/backyard probably just needs a few alterations. Start big: you’ll never want to chill outside if you have to sit on wobbly plastic garden chairs or rusty metal numbers, so rather invest in furniture that’s equally at home indoors and outdoors. Cane chairs – like the gorgeous Surabaya chairs (R2 695, Coricraft) – shift seamlessly from the lounge to the patio, and their hard-wearing materials mean you won’t have to constantly move them inside, and out of the elements. Cane, wicker and distressed wood furniture is all the rage at the moment, and it’s easy to see why. It’s comfortable and durable… very much like the slightly-worn denim jeans you love so much.

We highlighted that three-seater couch for a reason, though: patio sets are great – and we love the Terrace Leisure Manor Textilene set (R2 699, Makro) – but there’s a growing global trend towards comfier, more conversational seating arrangements. It’s all about socialising, and spending long afternoons with friends.

Speaking of which… The Keter Cool Bar R1 099, Makro, pictured) is just what you’ll need on those lazy days. It doubles up as a table and (when the top pops) a drinks cooler. We just love it in red.

Make sure the only thing sizzling this summer is the braai! Keep yourself cool with a little shade cover. The Arizona Pavilion (R3 490, Builders Warehouse) is ideal for this.

Finally, even if your interior walls have more grey areas than a local law book, find a couple of key items that’ll bring a pop of colour to your outdoor living space. It could be anything from a bright green umbrella, like the Out and About 200cm Patio Umbrella Marine Geo (R399, Game), to a ruby-red footstool, like the Terrace Leisure Manor Textilene Stacking Ottoman (R299, Makro). All it needs to do is brighten up the backyard, and remind you that you’re not stuck inside!
