Stumped for what to get your loved one this year? SA’s best bloggers weigh in with some great ideas.
While flowers and chocolate are a great back-up plan, here are a few ideas that will really wow your date.
A SPECIAL SCENT
Lungi Zuma, blogger at bylungi.com, recommends a gift that keeps on giving. “I love Valentine's gifts that last for months afterwards to remind me of the day, so perfume is perfect.” For that perfect heavenly scent, Lungi recommends Miss Dior Absolutely Blooming for ladies, and Bleu de Chanel for lads. Red Square stocks a wide variety of luxury brands for the Valentine really wanting to impress, or get a more affordable scent inspired by the designer fragrances from just R40 at Signature Cosmetics and Fragrances.
CHARM HER OFF HER FEET
A little charm goes a long way, says designer and blogger Brett Robson of BrettRobson.com. “I think a great Valentine's Day gift would be a charm bracelet. It doesn't have to be expensive, and the charms could represent special memories that the couple share. Maybe start with one or two and build on it over time.” American Swiss, Galaxy & Co and Sterns have a variety of bracelets and charms to suit different budgets.
A SHARED EXPERIENCE
For Pamela Mbhele of Pamsole, Valentine’s Day is not about a gift, but about experiences as a couple. She recommends something you can do together – like a picnic, a couple’s spa voucher or a special dinner. With loans starting from R1 000, RCS can give you the help you need to create the perfect occasion.
THE PERSONAL TOUCH
For Mpho Ntlatleng of Fitted Muse, nothing says ‘I love you’ quite like the effort of something homemade. A scrapbook filled with polaroids, cute quotes and corny messages all put together by you is just the thing for the perfect sentimental gift. CNA and Typo stock all sorts of great goodies to get this done.
IT’S THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS
Show your Valentine you really care by doing something that they love – even if it’s not your favourite thing to do, suggests Eleanor Douglas-Meyers of Just Ella Bella. Pick up a new Xbox game or accessory from Musica for the two of you to play together, or hit CNA for a new ‘boys’ DVD that you know he’ll love, and then have a movie night. If he’s the outdoor sort, Katchie Nzama of Travel with Katchie recons there’s nothing more romantic than a new pair of hiking boots. Cape Union Mart will have the perfect thing (we recommend the adidas AX2 shoe, R1 299). Plan a fun day exploring a new hiking route.
Whether you have a significant other or not, Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to spoil yourself and get something you’ve really been wanting, says Palesa Kgasane of Mzansi Moodboard. “This Valentine's Day I'll be focusing on giving the love back to myself,” she says. Palesa’s wishlist includes items like the Block heel pump by Daisy Street at Superbalist (R499) and Clubmaster sunglasses by Ray-Ban at Sunglass Hut (R2 690).
